About

St. John is depicted, writing his gospel. In the background his symbol can be seen, the eagle, holding a scroll. The gospels are thought to be a gift from Emperor Otto I of Germany to Athelstan, who presented them to Christ Church, Canterbury, and were used as the Coronation Book of the Anglo Saxon kings.

This manuscript was originally produced in South Netherlands in Lobbes, near Liege c. 897-900.
