St John looks directly out of this page from the Lindisfarne Gospels. He appears to be expounding the contents of his scroll. He is accompanied by his symbol, the eagle. The Lindisfarne Gospels is one of the most magnificent manuscripts surviving form the early Middle Ages. It was written and decorated at the end of the 7th century by the monk Eadfrith, who later became Bishop of Lindisfarne.
