Ashraf ‘Ali Khan smoking a hookah

A portrait of Ashraf ‘Ali Khan (d. 1792), half-brother of the emperor Ahmad Shah, smoking a hookah. He is wearing a white jama with a brown shawl, and sites cross legged on a chair, with gold slippers on the floor. In the background boats and sandbanks can be seen in the River Ganges. The original watercolour was painted by Dip Chand in Patna in 1764. It is thought that this portrait was intended to be a pair, along with a portrait of Muttubby, mistress of Ashraf ‘Ali Khan. This manuscript is featured in the British Library exhibition, Mughal India: Art, Culture and Empire. Add.Or.763.
