This beautifully illustrated 14th-century manuscript edition of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales features the author himself, in the illuminated letter a. Some scholars believe the illustration was painted by Hermann Scheerre. This illustration shows the opening to the Prologue and includes foliate borders.
