Duke of Sussex's Italian Pentateuch
This manuscript presents a rare example of the embellishing of the initial letter in a Hebrew manuscripts - a practice commonly associated with Latin sacred texts, but skilfully adapted here by an anonymous Jewish scribe working in 15th-century Italy. The embellished letter is alef and the text begins: These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab. The image is taken from Deuteronomy 1 in the Duke of Sussex's Italian Pentateuch. The manuscript was created in Italy, c.1400.
