Mr. Lunardi's new balloon
This striking image of Mr. Lunardi ascending in his new balloon in May 1785. The image is taken from a collection of newspaper cuttings. The balloon was decorated with a Union Jack, in which manner he 'wished to express his respects and devotion to everything which the word British stands for'. Vincent Lundardi made the first balloon flight from English soil in 1784. L.R.301.h.3.
