In this traditional Nativity scene the Virgin Mary is reclining on a tilted bed, with Joseph seated at the foot, with the newborn Christ in a crib. The image is from the preface to the first blessing for Christmas Day in the Benedictional of St. Aethelwold, originally produced in Winchester in 971-984.
